Dan Kempton
IT Enterprise Architecture Director

Dan Kempton serves as IT enterprise architecture director for the N.C. Department of Information Technology. An accomplished IT executive with more than 35 years’ experience, he has a passion for adopting and incorporating technology to reach business goals in both the public and private sectors.
Kempton researches new and existing technologies and their potential impacts on the state, evaluates the state’s application portfolio and provides assessments for policy. Under his leadership, several NCDIT teams, including the engineering section, have brought new products, most notably multi-cloud capabilities for state agencies to safely use.
His previous IT leadership roles include deputy chief information officer and chief technology officer at the N.C. Department of Revenue as well as startups and mid-to-large companies. His technical expertise spans system architecture, application development, infrastructure design and performance benchmarks.
Kempton is also an adjunct professor in North Carolina State University’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. He publishes articles on GovLoop.com, a knowledge network for federal, state and local government, and has served on multiple technology advisory boards American National Standards Institute committees.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, a master’s degree in computer science from the University of South Carolina and certification as a government CIO officer from the UNC School of Government. He has also earned various certifications focused on cloud technologies, including Amazon Web Services Solution Architect and AWS Database Specialist.
