Martha Wewer
Chief Privacy Officer

Martha Wewer is a privacy governance professional dedicated to navigating complex and evolving privacy laws to protect data and ensure that individuals understand their rights regarding use, consent, transparency and choice when it comes to their personal data. With 25 years' experience in the public and private sectors, she joined the N.C. Department of Information Technology in May 2025.
She oversees the Office of Privacy and Data Protection, within NCDIT’s Enterprise Security and Risk Management Office, and manages the state’s privacy program and ensures transparency in the use of data. She also provides guidance and support to state agencies seeking to accomplish the important task of protecting the privacy of residents.
Previously, Wewer served as the global privacy officer and general counsel at RTI International for 10 years and as the privacy officer at the State Health Plan for North Carolina for five years. She has also practiced law in North Carolina.
She is a Certified Information Privacy Professional and holds a law degree from the University of San Diego, School of Law and bachelor’s in political science from the University of California, San Diego.
