Mike Ware

Chief Information Officer, N.C. Department of Transportation

Mike Ware became the N.C. Department of Information Technology’s chief information officer for the N.C. Department of Transportation in June 2025.

Ware joined NCDIT in 2014 and previously served for nine years as the CIO for the N.C Department of Environmental Quality. He provided strategic direction and operational oversight for IT services supporting more than 1,500 employees.

For more than 20 years, he served as an U.S. Air Force officer, culminating as director of operations for the 83rd Network Operations Squadron at Langley Air Force Base. During his service, he also directed IT operations with international partners during overseas deployments in Bosnia and Iraq.

Ware's leadership has received multiple recognitions, including the 2023 NC TECH Public Sector CIO of the Year and the Governor’s Award for Excellence for Efficiency and Innovation.

He completed the Certified Government Chief Information Officer program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds a master’s in business administration from Webster University and a bachelor’s in management information systems from National American University.
