Workforce Diversity Internship Program

The N.C. Department of Information Technology’s Workforce Diversity Internship program offers a variety of paid, experiential learning opportunities for those who desire to work in technology. Interns will be pursuing or have technology-related education and experience.

Interns gain real-world work experience, contribute to NCDIT's day-to-day operations and connect with diverse individuals and communities.

  • Dates: Available in the summer and throughout the year
  • Work type: 20 to 40 hours a week, remote
  • Pay: $20 hourly

Intelligent Automation

The intern will learn how to effectively engage with stakeholders in the evaluation of processes and their ability to be automated. The intern will also learn process automation skills through available platform solutions. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Work directly with subject matter experts, business partners, service owners and project teams to develop and deliver high-quality automation (RPA, AI/Chatbot, API, Low Code)
  • Collaborate with service and solutions teams to understand enterprise business and IT service requirements to define and prioritize automation approach
  • Use automation platforms to produce solutions (e.g., UIPath, MS Power Platform, Boomi, SimpliGov)
  • Develop innovative automation solutions that transform the service delivery to our stakeholders

Network Services

The intern will learn the fundamentals of networking, network equipment configuration and troubleshooting, as well as some design work. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Network equipment configuration
  • Troubleshoot network and network equipment issues
  • Configure Cisco switches for deployment
  • Older switches upgrade

Geographic Information System (GIS) and Story-Mapping

The intern will interview GIS managers in state agencies to identify a project that demonstrates the value of GIS within each agency. The intern will coordinate with the agency GIS manager and the intern supervisor to use ESRI StoryMaps to document the project. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with Microsoft Teams interviews of state agency GIS managers to identify an important GIS project for each agency
  • Coordinate with intern supervisor and agency GIS managers to collect images, documentation, websites and other information needed to create the StoryMap
  • Write text to effectively demonstrate how the GIS project has benefited the agency
  • Design a draft website for each agency using ESRI StoryMaps to communicate the value of GIS as demonstrated by the identified project including text, images and GIS examples
  • Coordinate with NCDIT Communications to learn best practices and receive feedback on draft websites
  • Correspond with agency staff to incorporate edits and revisions for each draft website
  • Compile finalized websites into a single StoryMap with pages for each agency

IT Project Coordinator

The intern will gain a high-level perspective of what it takes to lead a broad spectrum of IT services. The intern will gain organizational and task management, collaboration and coordination skills. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Take lead on managing and providing updates on multiple low to mid-level IT projects and tasks
  • Managing VoIP migration
  • Leading and facilitating IT work groups (focus groups, communication sessions)
  • Scheduling meetings and audio/visual projects
  • Renaming email and network domains
  • Coordinating the consolidation of IT process and how-to documents
  • Submitting security and procurement exceptions (includes gathering detailed information on these requests)
  • Other various task related to completing IT tasks
