HBCU Internships

Applications for spring/summer internships will be accepted through April 1, 2024.

The N.C. Department of Information Technology’s HBCU internship program offers a variety of paid, full-time experiential learning opportunities for students in IT-related degree programs at historically Black colleges and universities. Interns gain real-world work experience, contribute to our day-to-day operations and connect with diverse individuals and communities.

  • Date: Summer 2024
  • Application period: Feb. 1 to April 1, 2024
  • Work type: 40 hours a week, remote
  • Pay: $20 hourly

Preference will be given to students at HBCUs in North Carolina, but students at HBCUs outside the state will also be consideredPreference will also be given to candidates who either reside in North Carolina or are within a 3-hour commute to the duty station assigned for the internship.

The position will provide the intern with the opportunity to understand IT-related customer service and support, customer relationship management, IT service level agreements and IT service processes.

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Business Relationship Management team in hands-on work to administer critical business relationship management functions, including contact management, satisfaction analysis and customer engagement
  • Shadow seasoned enterprise NCDIT business relationship managers. This will afford the Business Relationship Management intern a chance to gain knowledge of how services and technologies can be best leveraged to meet business needs.
  • Gain a better understanding of the qualifying factors involved in aligning IT providers' services to customer requirements in a way that affects delivery
  • Contribute to active Agile IT projects in flight within the Customer Experience Section

The position will provide the intern with the opportunity to develop skills used daily by cloud-native web developers and designers, including (but not limited to) Agile software development principles, technical skills in HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, Python, Amazon Web Services, user experience (UX) and digital accessibility.

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Building content and testing functionality within a Drupal 10 enterprise content management system
  • Developing and designing features for Drupal 10
  • Interfacing and supporting customers with advanced development and troubleshooting
  • Designing accessible and equitable interfaces for cloud-native web applications

The position will provide dynamic learning experiences for aspiring individuals in the IT field. This internship will offer hands-on exposure to various aspects of IT, including but not limited to system administration, network management, cybersecurity and technical support. Interns will collaborate with experienced professionals, participate in real-world projects and gain practical skills in troubleshooting, software/hardware maintenance and IT best practices.

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Processing service tickets for endpoint devices
  • Endpoint device troubleshooting
  • Endpoint device install
  • Networking equipment installs/troubleshooting
  • Server equipment installs

The position will provide the intern with the opportunity to learn database technologies, trending cloud technologies and gain leadership skills.

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Building databases in Oracle and SQL Server on premises and in the cloud
  • Assist in tasks involving database backups, restore and security and scripting to improve operational efficiency
  • Familiarize self with and configure monitoring as needed in supported monitoring tools such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, Dynatrace and Cloud Watch

The position will provide the intern with the opportunity to learn about SharePoint administration, Microsoft Power Platform utilization, website development and Azure DevOps as related to IT and state government.

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Assist SharePoint admins with SharePoint site migrations
  • Document ownership for SharePoint sites
  • Assist with SharePoint support tickets
  • Contribute to migrating Microsoft Access databases to Microsoft Dynamics
  • Attend meetings with the business units and notate requirements
  • Review HTML code and JavaScript for sites that need content updated
  • Use Azure DevOps to document tasks and collaborate with the team

The position will provide the intern with the opportunity to learn basic knowledge of SharePoint, Microsoft Teams and the N.C. Department of Information Technology’s services and to work with a technical team in IT and state government.

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Write articles for All the Things M365 newsletter
  • Analyze information about Enterprise Collaboration Services on various SharePoint sites and public websites
  • Collaborate with various teams to publish information

The position will provide the intern with the opportunity to work with the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation by performing impactful market research. The intern will assist with entity relationship diagrams, normalization, workflow diagrams, human-computer interaction wireframe diagrams and system diagrams (front end, back end and middleware).

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Documentation of systems, architectures and structures, applications, workflows and modifications in accordance with industry standards, MC, AWS, dockers/containers and SDL
  • Collaborate with the team on modernizing application code and systems, as assigned in projects
  • Review code for recommendations to improve supporting and troubleshooting applications
  • Participate in the integration of division applications with other systems inside the state and with public vendors
  • Learn end-user support documentation, project planning, road mapping and knowledgebase collection creation

The position will provide the intern with the opportunity to prepare for career opportunities and points of entry into the IT profession. The intern will gain knowledge and experience with custom off the shelf (COTS) solutions, software/application development, application integrations, functional testing, software testing, software analytics, software implementation and software maintenance for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles modernization effort.

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Learn and develop skills in information technology in software and hardware
  • Collaborate on developing functional test plans from requirements through design, executing test cases and preparing the necessary documentation
  • Execute test cases based on detailed instructions to ensure that validations are in place to catch any exceptions and analyze the data for defects or bugs
  • Receive, log and fully document requests for support from the service desk, other service delivery staff and/or users
  • Perform regression testing for all new software releases
  • Assist with quality assurance test efforts where appropriate and applicable
  • Assist with the creation of help guides and training manuals for users
  • Maintain a complete inventory of all card devices and computers by each branch location
