HBCU Internships

The N.C. Department of Information Technology’s HBCU internship program offers a variety of paid, full-time experiential learning opportunities for students in IT-related degree programs at historically Black colleges and universities. Interns gain real-world work experience, contribute to our day-to-day operations and connect with diverse individuals and communities.

  • Dates: May 22, 2023 to Aug. 3, 2023
  • Work type: 40 hours a week, remote
  • Pay: $20 hourly

Data Center Information Management

The intern will learn about the operational aspects of the Data Centers Information Management (DCIM) system. The intern will develop ideas and concepts to improve capabilities for NCDIT data center clients. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Population data center assets
  • Validating interfaces
  • Adding, deleting and modifying information
  • Produce information reports on status and operation service levels of data center systems and service

Database Analyst

The will learn about database technologies and trending cloud technologies and gain leadership skills. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Building databases in Oracle and SQL Server on premises and in the cloud
  • Assist in tasks involving database backups, restore and security, and scripting to automate verifications as needed to improve operational efficiency
  • Familiarize self with and configure monitoring as needed in supported monitoring tools such as Oracle Grid, Dynatrace and Cloud Watch

Endpoint Management Support

The intern will learn about providing technical support to the N.C. Department of Public Safety and N.C. Department of Adult Correction for desktop computers, mobile devices and printers in the Wake County area. This intern will provide technical hardware and software support, including:

  • Imaging and installing new computers for new hires, break-fixes and PC exchanges
  • Troubleshooting hardware-related issues
  • Loading software and supporting end user problems associated with software
  • Assisting with asset management and inventory control (updating the MET Database)
  • Troubleshooting systems at different locations using the remote support software “LogMeIn”
  • Resolving incidents and requests assigned in the ServiceNow Ticketing system

GIS Digital Data Enhancement

The intern will learn about the role in public health played by that the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Marine Fisheries, and Shellfish Sanitation and Recreational Water Quality. The intern will gain technical experience with the platforms ArcGIS Online and ArcMap, as well as field application software Field Maps utilized on iPads. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Shellfish Sanitation staff with developing their digital data collection and visualization
  • Assist with creating data layers for shoreline survey collection to more efficiently collect data on pollution sources impacting shellfish harvesting and public health
  • Create data layers for digital data collection and create content for the public to better understand Shellfish Sanitation data
  • Work with field sampling staff to see about implementing some of that auto data acquisition through the iPad sampling app and/or working on other enhancements to that
  • Assist with creation of AGOL story maps to help the public better understand the work that the section does

Increasing Privacy Awareness

The intern will learn about privacy and how it relates to data, IT and state government, as well as federal and state privacy laws, policies and guidance. The intern will gain skills in communications, instructional design, outreach and presentations. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Privacy outreach
  • Creation of privacy training and outreach materials
  • Presenting or supporting presentations to various stakeholder groups about privacy
  • Creating content about privacy for inclusion in newsletters, the privacy website and distribution
  • Creation of PowerPoint slide decks, Microsoft Word documents and other materials about privacy
  • Organization and categorization of privacy materials

NCDIT Service Desk

The intern will learn about the NCID Identity Management platform, other services offered by NCDIT and how we support the government employees, private businesses and citizens of North Carolina. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Learn customer service skills used to ensure a positive customer experience
  • Learn tools used by the NCDIT Service Desk to support customers
  • Learn how to open a ticket for NCID support

Statewide IT Procurement Assessment

The intern will perform impactful market research. The intern will learn how research allows government agencies to make informed decisions and spend taxpayer dollars in a transparent, efficient and responsible manner while meeting the state's procurement rules. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Create and develop a questionnaire to collect feedback on department performance, future opportunities and potential improvements to be used to obtain performance results
  • Analyze data to pinpoint opportunities to improve services
  • Perform market research by interviewing stakeholders utilizing a questionnaire to obtain data
  • Conduct process analysis by utilizing findings to determine pain points and work with stakeholders to improve process
  • Create a plan to implement a change in process from above, and determine obstacles to the change and benefits from the plan
  • Create a repeatable, potentially ongoing customer relationship management process

Web Development

The intern will learn the day-to-day operations and tasks of a web developer on a team providing a web content management platform to over 70 state government entities. Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Working in an agile environment
  • VCS web development in Github, primarily using SASS/PHP/YAML
  • Developing for web in a cloud-native environment (Amazon Web Services)
