Approval & Participation

Tab/Accordion Items

All North Carolina state agencies and state employees can submit a request to the AI Accelerator. All requests are evaluated by the AI Accelerator Steering Team based on the program’s evaluation criteria to determine feasibility and impact.

The AI Accelerator Steering Team reviews all requests for the AI Accelerator. If it accepts the use case, the agency’s CIO will provide final approval to allow the use case to move into the AI Accelerator.

Agencies and employees are welcome to submit any use case to the AI Accelerator they would like to see AI solve. Initially, the AI Accelerator is focused on:

  • Working on projects that build trust in AI
  • Building use case diversity to demonstrate the capabilities of AI
  • Exploring new capabilities and innovations not yet used in the state of North Carolina
  • Exploring projects that improve quality of services
  • Finding projects that involve a high impact and high return on investment

The AI Accelerator engagement cycle consists of members from NCDIT, members from the state agency that provides the use case and a selection of external participants, such as private entities, other government entities and students.

Initially, the AI Accelerator is being run through NCDIT with users from the requesting agency and any participants.

In later phases, North Carolina state employees will be welcomed and encouraged to support the AI Accelerator as volunteers. Volunteers will be able to assist with the engagement, with manager approval.

Process & Responsibilities

Tab/Accordion Items

The AI Accelerator runs in cycles, called engagements. These engagements take 60 days, on average. Each engagement is meant to be quick and agile to go from concept to development to creation of a prototype.

  • The agency will need to take part in a design session to share requirements – in particular around its data – to be used during the AI Accelerator engagement.
  • Once the engagement starts, the agency will need to provide a business point of contact and technical point of contact to participate in the engagement.
  • The agency will also need to take part in weekly status meetings to evaluate the effectiveness and any additional needs for the engagement.

No. The AI Accelerator Steering Team will create a team to support the engagement.

If there is an external entity or individual that a state agency is interested in participating in the use case, then the AI Accelerator Steering Team will coordinate with the entity or individual to sign a participation agreement with the AI Accelerator.

The AI Accelerator conducts a design session with the agency prior to the engagement. Currently, the agency can only use public, “low-risk” data in the engagement.

The AI Accelerator will ask its participants, which may include state agencies and external entities, to sign agreements that will help protect the data in each use case.

If the state agency’s data is classified as “medium-” or “high-risk,” then the use case will need to be designed to use synthetic data with consultation from the Enterprise Data Office. Please note that use case submissions involving synthetic data will be part of Phase 2 of the AI Accelerator.

Yes. The AI Accelerator works with university partners, nonprofits, private companies, other government agencies and other individuals that have agreements with the AI Accelerator.

Post-Engagement Outcomes

Tab/Accordion Items

The goal of the AI Accelerator is to see if AI can solve the problems provided by the agency and show what is possible. An engagement is a success when the AI Accelerator provides a solution that answers the questions provided by the agency within the engagement.

After a successful engagement, the AI Accelerator team helps develop a story that captures the use case and how AI was able to solve this problem. The story is shared with the agency, Governor and other legislators and may be published to the public.

If the agency would like to put this solution into production, NCDIT’s AI Accelerator Steering Team will assist the agency in completing the procurement form with the information from the engagement. This procurement will still need to go through the standard procurement process and go out for bid.

If the engagement has not been able to provide a solution, or the provided solution does not satisfy the agency’s needs, the AI Accelerator team will capture the information in a story to keep on record. The agency will still have access to all information found during the engagement, so it can continue to look at further solutions.

We will be maintaining a list of case studies and statewide success stories to showcase how AI is benefiting the state. The goal of the AI Accelerator is for NCDIT to be transparent in all state activities around AI.
