We Are NC Gov explored digital transformation in the state of North Carolina during a half-day conference on Oct. 25, 2023, organized by the N.C. Department of Information Technology and the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality. It centered on the theme of harnessing digital technology to elevate service delivery to constituents, emphasizing both experiential insights and successful strategies.

NCDIT Secretary Jim Weaver gave opening remarks on importance of making sure government is working for people in the digital age and the need for collaboration and continuous improvement.

NCDIT's Digital Solutions team presented on tools to improve the user experience, increase accessibility and enhance the quality of content on state government websites. NCDEQ IT Program Director Billy Hylton discussed modernizing the permitting process by putting the user first.

Jennifer Pahlka, author of Recoding America: hy Government Is Failing in the Digital Age and How We Can Do Better, explored the importance of designing services thoughtfully and crafting implementable policies.

She discussed the need to eliminate the divide between policy people and technology people and to make sure everyone has a seat at the policy table to ensure that government works for the people. She gave examples from her services as U.S. deputy chief technology officer.

Pahlka is also the founder of Code for America, a nonprofit that believes government can work for people in the digital age.
