The Next Chapter: How Current & Past Military Members Can Continue Their Call to Service at NCDIT

Author: Jennifer Chonillo

North Carolina is proud to be home to the largest military presence in the United States. More than 135,000 active servicemembers and an estimated 800,000 military veterans, nearly one-tenth of our population, and their families call our state home.

Governor Roy Cooper is committed to supporting current and past servicemembers and their families and keeping North Carolina the most military and veteran friendly state in the nation. In 2023, Forbes named the state of North Carolina as a top-50 Best Employer for Veterans in the country, the only state government to receive this recognition.

At the N.C. Department of Information Technology, we share this same commitment and understand the unique challenges current and former servicemembers and their families face.  NCDIT can be a great fit for many veterans looking to continue their service in a meaningful and tangible way.  The skills learned in service translate well to our work to leverage technology in support of a more equitable, prosperous, healthier and educated state.

NCDIT’s employees enjoy opportunities to continually explore new technologies and create systems and applications that support critical services for the residents, businesses and visitors of our state.

Examples of those services include:

  • Broadband access and digital equity
  • Cybersecurity
  • Data analytics
  • Emergency services
  • Geographic Information Systems
  • Health IT
  • Networking
  • Privacy and data protection

NCDIT has several initiatives designed to help past and current military personnel and their spouses find rewarding careers with us, often without needing previous experience. Several of these opportunities are in cybersecurity and include:

  • Internship and apprenticeship programs
  • Hiring preference for qualified individuals
  • Military career fair attendance
  • Interview and application meet and greets

NCDIT’s services reach North Carolinians from all backgrounds, and having a diverse workforce is our most valuable asset to recognize, understand and meet the IT needs of all our constituents. Our agency’s culture intentionally values diversity, equity and inclusion through the implementation of thoughtful, practical, innovative and data-driven strategies.
