According to a report by CareerBuilder, between 22 and 25% of technology industry workers are searching for a new career opportunity. Most commonly, job searchers want a position with better benefits, more flexibility or that is more meaningful to their community. The N.C. Department of Information Technology prioritizes all of these factors, along with other offerings that make it a great place to work.
1. Flexible Working Environment with Remote Opportunities
Remote work availability is one of the top three reasons why someone wants to find a new job, according to a recent survey by Indeed and Glassdoor. NCDIT offers its team a flexible working environment with remote working opportunities depending on the position. Some positions are hybrid to help encourage interaction, collaboration and innovation.
We also provide flexibility for our workforce by allowing team members to choose a schedule that fits both their and their team’s needs.
2. A Comprehensive Benefits Package
We offer our employees comprehensive benefits that they can customize to their unique needs. In addition to health insurance coverage and retirement benefits, we offer a variety of optional benefits:

Employees can choose two options to for the State Health Plan: the 70/30 Plan and the 80/20 Plan. Both plans provide enrollees with freedom of choice for their providers, low out-of-pocket costs and financial incentives for taking steps to improve health. For example, if employees complete a tobacco attestation, they receive a $60 monthly credit on their premiums.
NCDIT employees are also enrolled in the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement Plan. TSERS was named one of the best funded retirement plans in the United States. Employees can contribute to optional supplemental retirement plans such as the NC 401(k) Plan and the NC 457 Plan.
3. Work that Impacts Your Community
A career in public service gives you the opportunity to improve daily life for those around you. All of our work has the ultimate goal of improving the lives of North Carolinians.
NCDIT's scope of work is incredibly broad and goes far beyond providing IT services to the state. From expanding affordable, reliable high-speed internet to communities across the state and supporting North Carolina’s 911 system, to protecting the state from cybersecurity attacks and enabling data sharing and integration across state agencies, our efforts make a real and tangible difference for others.
4. Student Loan Forgiveness through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
When you work at NCDIT, you may be eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
Managed by the U.S. Department of Education, the program forgives the remaining balance on direct student loans after an individual has made the equivalent of 120 qualifying monthly payments under an accepted repayment plan while working full-time for an eligible employer like a government or non-profit organization.
5. Work-Life Balance
We understand that our employees work to provide for their lives outside of work, and that is why NCDIT values work-life balance. Along with offering a flexible working environment, we have a number of family leave options available to our employees.
In addition to Family and Medical Leave, employees can take 52 weeks of leave without pay during a five-year period to care for a seriously ill child, spouse or parent as part of our Family Illness Leave Policy. We also offer Paid Parental Leave to eligible employees who become a parent through birth, adoption, foster care or other legal placement of a child. This leave entitles an employee to 100% of their regular pay for four weeks to bond with and care for their child.
6. Generous Employee Leave Options
NCDIT also offers a variety of additional leave options, and employees receive 12 paid holidays each year. They are also given Personal Observance Leave, which can be used for one calendar day of personal significance annually.
Employees also have a set number of community service hours each year to support volunteerism, if they choose. Our team members are given time to volunteer to support schools, communities, residents and non-profit organizations under the community service leave option. Parents can use this leave for involvement in their children’s schools.
7. Inclusive Working Environment for Employees
We are committed to creating an inclusive working environment for our team. Some of the ways we foster this type of environment are by creating diverse internship programs, including internships for neurodiverse individuals and students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, working with NC Career Advancement Resources for State Employees on the Spectrum (NCCARES), supporting veterans transitioning out of military employment and our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee.
8. Lifelong Learning is a Priority
One important priority of NCDIT is supporting continuous learning. To do this, we provide our employees with a range of learning opportunities for their continued growth and development. We have established communities of practice, which are groups of people who are committed to improving on a specific area of focus, and we also offer a wide variety of training to support both professional and personal growth.
Employees have access to LinkedIn Learning and Udemy Business, as well as other opportunities through SAS, Gartner and Microsoft. NCDIT also offers classroom and virtual learning, including comprehensive leadership development programs, roundtables and other sessions for managers, and required cybersecurity and privacy training.
9. Discounts for Employees
NCDIT employees have access to an employee discount program called Perks at Work. Discounts available to employees through this program include gym memberships, travel, theater tickets, and more.
10. Employee Recognition
We are committed to recognizing our employees’ hard work and showing appreciation for all they do. NCDIT offers many opportunities to celebrate and honor accomplishments, including a number of departmental employee recognition awards and Governor’s recognition awards issued by the state.
We also encourage employees to submit “Kudos” for their colleagues in our monthly employee newsletter, and we hold an annual Employee Appreciation Day and other employee celebrations throughout the year to thank and recognize our team.
These are just a few of the reasons to consider working for NCDIT. If you are interested in a rewarding career serving our state, we encourage you to apply to one of our available jobs today.
