Introducing the new generation of the Digital Commons platform, upgraded to the latest Drupal technology, with benefits for North Carolinians, state agencies and content creators who update their websites

In 2014, the Digital Commons initiative was conceived to create a more consistent, intuitive state government web experience for North Carolina. A centralized, modern web platform on open-source and cloud-based technologies was established to run most agency websites, the NC.gov state portal and more.

Recently upgraded, the enterprise-grade version of this content management system, the new Digital Commons platform was launched in 2022. It brings further improvements to an accessible, secure, user and mobile-friendly interface that does not require web coding skills. Modern responsive design in Bootstrap 5 enables websites to be easily accessed and automatically rendered on any device. Over 60 state websites are running on the platform, enabling state government agencies to deliver services, resources and information to key audiences in a more streamlined, consistent manner.

The Digital Commons platform offers state agencies cohesion through a standardized look and feel, as well as best practices for website management, putting content in the hands of communicators and subject matter experts. The Digital Commons initiative has embraced a collaborative approach and encourages leveraging analytics, user survey research and related user-centered approaches to meet end-user needs.
