The U.S. Department of Justice is requiring state websites and apps to comply with WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act by April 2026.

The N.C. Department of Information Technology’s Office of AI & Policy, in partnership with Microsoft, is offering free hands-on training on Feb. 12-13 to equip developers and technical staff with the essential skills and tools to help agencies meet these critical requirements.

Space is limited. Registration is required by Monday, Feb. 9.

Event Details

Day 1: GitHub Copilot Fundamentals Workshop

Thursday, Feb. 12 | 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Get hands-on experience with AI-assisted development and understand how GitHub Copilot can accelerate your workflow and improve code quality.

Day 1 Outcomes:

  • Shared vocabulary and best practices for Copilot use
  • Confidence with core features, customization, and safe use controls
  • Environments validated for next day’s hackathon

Day 2: GitHub Copilot - Accessibility Hackathon

Friday, Feb. 13 | 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Learn practical techniques to modernize legacy applications and achieve WCAG 2.1 AA compliance before the April deadline using GitHub Copilot.

Day 2 Outcomes:

  • A reusable Custom Instruction template aligned to WCAG 2.1 Level AA/NCDIT standards
  • Tangible code improvements (tests, refactors, docs) completed with Copilot
  • A prioritized backlog for applying Copilot in additional repos/use cases

Please Note: Lunch will not be provided on either day.  Please plan to bring your own or purchase nearby.

Who Should Attend?

This technical training is designed for:

  • State agency developers and architects at all skill levels
  • Technical staff supporting applications requiring accessibility updates
  • Anyone technical working with legacy systems that need modernization 

Participant Prerequisites

Participants should have:

  • Laptop with IDE of choice (VS Code/JetBrains/Visual Studio)
  • GitHub account with appropriate org/repo access
  • (If applicable) GitHub Enterprise entitlements for Copilot Coding Agent demo
  • Ability to clone, build, and run sample repos
