Training Opportunity: Building Privacy Expertise Across North Carolina

The Certified Information Privacy Manager certification is the leading credential for privacy program management and focuses on operationalizing privacy within organizations, offering practical tools and techniques for managing data protection effectively.

As part of our mission to implement privacy across the state and strengthen privacy programs, the Office of Privacy and Data Protection (OPDP) is pleased to offer a new training opportunity for agency privacy officers and privacy points of contact. This initiative aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to build and maintain robust privacy practices within their agencies.

What Is the CIPM Certification?

The Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) certification, offered by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), is the leading credential for privacy program management. The CIPM focuses on operationalizing privacy within organizations, offering practical tools and techniques for managing data protection effectively.

Participants in this training will learn:

  • How to develop and implement a comprehensive privacy program
  • Methods for integrating privacy management into the business lifecycle
  • Strategies for responding to privacy incidents and ensuring compliance with privacy laws and regulations
  • Best practices for fostering a culture of privacy within their organization

This certification is particularly relevant for individuals responsible for overseeing privacy initiatives, ensuring compliance and embedding privacy into their agency’s operations.

Why Is This Training Important?

Privacy is a cornerstone of responsible governance and public trust. By investing in CIPM training for agency privacy officers and privacy points of contact, North Carolina is creating a holistic and consistent approach to privacy management across all state agencies. The training will:

  • Strengthen the privacy knowledge of key personnel
  • Enhance the state’s ability to safeguard sensitive information
  • Ensure compliance with privacy laws and policies
  • Promote a unified and effective privacy program statewide

How to Get Registered

In January, the Office of Privacy and Data Protection communicated directly with agency CIOs to offer CIPM training licenses. Each agency is encouraged to submit one participant – whether it be the agency’s privacy officer, privacy point of contact or another individual who would benefit from the training.

If your agency has not yet submitted a participant, and you know someone who would benefit from for this opportunity, please contact your agency CIO as soon as possible.

The OPDP is currently accepting one training participant per agency.

Building a Privacy-First Future

The OPDP is committed to empowering state agencies with the tools and training needed to effectively manage privacy. By offering CIPM certification, we’re ensuring that North Carolina remains a leader in data protection and privacy governance. Let’s work together to create a privacy-first culture across the state.
