Supporting the Mental Health of North Carolina’s 911 Telecommunicators

Every day, North Carolina’s 911 telecommunicators answer calls during some of the most difficult moments in people’s lives. They provide calm, clarity, and critical support while carrying the emotional weight of each situation long after the call ends. Their work is essential to public safety, and so is their well‑being.

To strengthen support for these frontline professionals, the N.C. 911 Board has recently expanded its Board‑funded mental health training opportunities. These courses are designed to help public safety answering points (PSAPs) better understand the emotional challenges telecommunicators face, build resilience within their teams, and create healthier, more sustainable workplaces. Using Board funding, PSAPs can either send their staff to these courses or choose to host sessions directly at their centers, making access simple and flexible.

By investing in wellness and emotional support, the N.C. 911 Board reinforces a clear message: the mental health of our telecommunicators matters. As the demands of 911 continue to grow, so does our commitment to ensuring these professionals receive the care, tools, and training they need to thrive.

During Mental Health Awareness Month and throughout the year, we remain dedicated to supporting the people who support all of us.
