Did you know that every time you go online you create thousands of data points? From the websites you visit and the purchases you make to the apps you use and the devices you carry, your digital footprint is constantly expanding.
This information can include deeply personal details such as your Social Security number, your health data and even the number of steps you take each day. This data is collected, analyzed and stored by organizations across the globe.
While you cannot control every piece of data that is gathered, you can control how you protect it.
Data Privacy Week is an annual international effort to raise awareness about the importance of privacy and empower people and organizations to safeguard personal information.
Privacy is not passive; it requires action. By making informed choices and adopting simple habits, you can reduce risks and protect your personal information.
Data privacy is essential because your personal information is more than just numbers and facts. It represents your identity, your security and your trust. When data is misused or exposed, the consequences can be severe.
Protecting privacy is not only about safeguarding individuals. It is about maintaining confidence in the systems we rely on every day and ensuring that technology works to advance people’s best interest.
The North Carolina Office of Privacy and Data Protection within the N.C. Department of Information Technology plays a crucial role in data privacy efforts. Our office leads the state’s work to ensure data is handled responsibly and securely. We set standards, provide guidance and deliver training to help employees and agencies protect sensitive information.
By doing so, we uphold public trust and strengthen the integrity of government services.
Privacy is not optional. It is a cornerstone of good governance and a fundamental right.
Remember, you have to power to take control of your data.
