Eric Boyette, secretary of the N.C. Department of Information Technology and the state’s chief information officer, has been elected president of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers.

The announcement came this week in Nashville at the NASCIO Annual Conference of state CIOs and IT executives from across the United States.

“The information technology landscape has changed, and we, as chief information officers, must be innovative and forward-thinking – especially with cybersecurity,” said Boyette, who will serve as president until October 2020. “Collaboration and partnerships are critical in addressing and embracing the challenges and opportunities we face.”

In his role, Boyette will work with NASCIO’s Executive Committee and be responsible for strategic planning as well as approving the annual budget and business workplan of the association. He previously served as NASCIO’s treasurer.

NASCIO helps support state CIOs, stimulates the exchange of information and promotes the adoption of IT best practices and innovations. It offers national conferences, peer networking, research and publications.

As secretary of NC DIT, Boyette is responsible for all IT procurement, state cybersecurity, operational services, broadband infrastructure, solutions division, data analytics center, the North Carolina 911 Board and strategic IT planning.

Prior to being appointed to the position by Gov. Roy Cooper in April 2017, Boyette worked for more than 20 years at the N.C. Department of Transportation, where he served in many roles, including chief information officer and commissioner of the Division of Motor Vehicles.
