North Carolinians now have greater access to critical emergency communications thanks to a new statewide campaign by the North Carolina 911 Board. The Board has launched a Public Service Announcement campaign highlighting the importance of Text-to-911, a service that allows residents to reach emergency responders by text message when calling 911 is not possible or safe.
Text-to-911 has already proven to be an essential tool for residents facing medical emergencies, unsafe conditions, or situations that limit their ability to speak. The service also supports residents who are deaf, hard of hearing, or experiencing a speech-related disability. In many emergencies, circumstances change rapidly and communication options may be limited. The ability to send a text message can be critical to ensuring that help arrives as quickly as possible.
To expand public awareness, the N.C. 911 Board is airing a new Public Service Announcement for 16 weeks across traditional linear television, streaming and connected television platforms, and mobile streaming services. Produced in collaboration with Spectrum Reach, the announcement reinforces an important message to help guide residents in urgent situations: “Call if you can, text if you cannot.”
In 2025, more than 70,000 Text-to-911 messages were sent to emergency communication centers across North Carolina. This number underscores the essential role Text-to-911 already plays in helping residents access assistance during high-risk or complex emergencies. As North Carolina continues to grow, it remains vital that residents have multiple safe, reliable ways to contact 911 whenever they need help.
Through this effort, the N.C. 911 Board continues to strengthen emergency communication systems and ensure that every resident has access to reliable support in a moment of crisis, regardless of their situation or ability.
