The N.C. Department of Information Technology’s Office of Privacy and Data Protection is taking the lead in identifying risks of generative AI and providing guidance for responsible use across state agencies.

The use of generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, is increasing dramatically for both personal and professional purposes. The N.C. Department of Information Technology’s Office of Privacy and Data Protection is taking the lead in identifying risks and providing guidance for state agencies’ responsible use of generative AI.

The privacy office is working with state agencies’ privacy points of contact to vet interim guidance that prepares staff to use generative AI and increases awareness of the associated risks.

In addition, the privacy office is working on a privacy threshold analysis focused on AI so that agencies can assess associated privacy and security risks. Agencies are also advised to document their AI usage and the data it might affect to allow for auditing and ensure accountability.
