Wide Area Network (WAN)

Service Description

The Wide Area Network (WAN) service offers statewide Internet Protocol (IP) data communications connectivity at commercially available rates to any authorized government entity. The managed WAN service connects the customer’s Local Area Network (LAN) to other customer locations, other state agencies (including DIT), and to the Internet using the state network. We will provide consultation to aid in the selection of data services.

Cost recovery is one charge per location and is primarily based on bandwidth consumption.

Three components of WAN service comprise the monthly recurring charges:

  • Core - Costs for hardware, software, maintenance of core network infrastructure and management of WAN service
  • Transport - Telecommunications provider cost for connecting the customer location to the regional point-of-presence (RPoP)
  • CPE – Costs for hardware, software, and maintenance of customer premise edge equipment

One-time charges are comprised of the following:

  • Installation of customer premise equipment
  • Telecommunications providers installation of the last mile transport service

Major cost drivers are:

  • The available transport technologies in your geographic area
  • Telecommunications service provider(s) available in your geographic area

Next Steps

  2. Submit a WAN Service request using the STS-01 form.
  3. We will place an order with the telecommunications vendor on contract for your service area to install the transport service.
  4. We will contact the on-site customer contact to schedule the installation of all customer premise edge (CPE) equipment required (generally a router).
  5. Generally this process takes 90-120 days to complete; however, when vendor construction or customer site work (such as conduit) is required, this can delay the installation, especially if permits are required for crossing roads, railroads, etc.

Communications and Status

DIT also provides communications through the DIT Customer Communications Hub when Incidents or outages occur that may impact the customer.
