A colorful accessibility-themed collage featuring symbols like a hearing ear, hands with hearts, a magnifying glass over the letter "A," an eye with a strikethrough, and Braille dots. Triangular and circular patterns in red, blue, orange, and green complete the design.

Why Digital Accessibility Matters

North Carolina is Committed to Ensuring Everyone Can Access Digital Government Services

Whether we realize it or not, we all benefit from digital accessibility. Things like simpler online navigation and website text that is easy to read and understand create a better digital experience for everyone. Accessibility also helps enhance security and reduce risk by reducing the need to create workarounds when people can't independently access systems.

At NCDIT, we are committed to ensuring all North Carolinians can easily and safely access and use digital government services:

  • Our Digital Commons platform supports close to 100 state websites and is designed with an accessibility-first approach.
  • We've developed the State of North Carolina Digital Accessibility & Usability Standard to offer guidance to state agencies on providing an accessible digital experience.
  • We offer comprehensive resources to help agencies build accessible content and align with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Title II Americans with Disabilities Act final rule.
  • We've established a cross-sector Digital Accessibility Community of Practice that brings together more than 550 members to share best practices, tools, and support.
  • Our Digital Accessibility Lead Amy Hepler was recently sworn in as a member of the new Commission on Accessibility established by Governor Josh Stein to discuss and determine how to make digital government services accessible to everyone. She is co-leading the commission's digital pillar.
