Cloud Services

The N.C. Department of Information Technology's Cloud Services is an enterprise service that provides a security-compliant, standardized approach to deploy cloud infrastructure with multiple cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This service also covers infrastructure operations management.

As customers consider migrating applications to a cloud environment, the NCDIT Cloud Services team can help them navigate the cloud environments to determine if adopting a cloud approach is the best option. During the onboarding process, the team reviews customers' design, assesses their security posture and gathers all the information necessary to help customers make that decision. The team calls this Cloud Smart.

Once a cloud scenario is determined to be the best option, Cloud Services utilizes the information gathered, provisions the environment and establishes the necessary credentials. The team then operates the infrastructure on customers' behalf, helping them maintain a secure environment based on industry standards and any applicable compliance requirements.

Service Features

NCDIT Cloud Services offers the following services:

NCDIT-Managed Service

This service offering provides a fully managed environment, allowing customers to focus their support on their business and applications. This service parallels NCDIT’s managed service for customers using the state data centers. With this service, customers can utilize the self-service tool to provision cloud resources or request that NCDIT provision resources on their behalf.

Customer-Managed Service and Proof of Concept

This service offering provides customers with a fully managed networking and security infrastructure. Depending on the need, customers may have direct access to the cloud portal to provision and manage resources, such as compute and storage within their environments.

Proof of concept (POC) environments are available for customers who have short-lived needs to evaluate cloud environments.

Benefits
  • NCDIT Cloud Services has already established contracts with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Cloud Services has implemented the Cloud Security Framework. It ensures a highly secure environment to help customers meet various compliance requirements while enforcing security policies, so customers can focus on their applications. The CSF utilizes the latest security components, is fully redundant and eliminates the need for individual firewalls within each project environment. By design, the CSF is highly cost-effective and is centrally controlled by NCDIT for each cloud vendor.
  • Billing for Cloud Services is included in the monthly billing agencies already receive. Each bill is categorized by the service code and cloud vendor, making it easier to determine the cloud spend.
  • Cloud Services unburdens customers from infrastructure operations, so they can focus on their applications.
  • The usage-based cost model benefits short-lived use cases and development footprints.
  • A cloud presence can provide a cost-effective environment for applications designed properly.
  • Cloud Services provides high-throughput network connections. NCDIT has implemented Direct Connect for the AWS Cloud and is implementing ExpressRoute for the Microsoft Azure Cloud.
  • Implementation of Cloud Services is based on the concept of having multiple clouds viewed as an extension of the state data centers and network, making integration with legacy systems seamless.
